The UK government and mobile network operators have agreed to phase out 2G and 3G services by 2033. This transition will repurpose frequencies for more efficient use, increasing data throughout and reducing energy consumption by adopting more energy-efficient 4G and 5G technologies. The phased shutdown schedule is:
- Vodafone: 3G by 2023
- EE: 3G by 2024, 2G by 2030
- Three: 3G by 2024
- Virgin Media O2: 3G by 2025
